How Grammarly and the Hemingway App Changed My Life

I’m no writing connoisseur, as you can probably tell from my previous posts. When it comes to writing and editing my own work, I tend to miss even the most obvious things – commas, run-on sentences, wonky sentence structure, and incorrectly using that dreaded semicolon.

In this fast-paced world, there isn’t often enough time to bring another set of eyes to review an email before sending it out or have someone edit your blog post before publishing it. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve sent out an important client email without giving it a second glance only to realise later on that it was littered with grammatical errors.

As someone who works in an industry that values effective communication, you’re judged by how you communicate your ideas and how you come across to your clients. In fact, in this digital age, we’re all judged by the quality of our writing. Unfortunately, most word processors nowadays still miss a lot of mistakes (I’m looking at you, Microsoft Word).

So, what changed the game for me? Two things: Grammarly and the Hemingway App.

Grammarly, in essence, is an AI-powered grammar and spell-check app that actually goes beyond simply checking grammar and spelling. It helps you write clean, concise, and error-free copy, while offering helpful suggestions to take your writing to the next level and effectively get your message across.

The Hemingway App, on the other hand, is an editor that highlights problematic areas in your writing and offers suggestions to help you improve grammar, fluency, sentence structure, and readability. Basically, it just makes your writing look and read better.

A quick tip: I copy and paste whatever it is that I want to be checked into Grammarly first to remove any spelling or grammatical errors. Once done, I copy and paste the edited content into the Hemingway App to improve overall readability and I’m left with something I never would have been able to come up with had I not used these apps! It’s brilliant!

Here’s why you should start using these apps, too:

  1. They boost your confidence – As I’ve previously mentioned, I have never considered myself to be an eloquent writer. However, knowing that I have these two apps at my disposal, I know I’d still be able to come up with something worth reading despite my less-than-stellar writing skills.
  2. They help immensely with dispute resolution – Grammarly offers suggestions to improve or customise your writing based on who or what your writing for. If you’re facing problems with whomever it is you’re communicating with, Grammarly helps you better form your messages by offering alternative word choices or making suggestions on your writing style/tone.
  3. They help facilitate effective communication – As much as I hate to admit it, these apps get my point across much better than I ever could! Grammar and spell-check aside, these apps also optimise your writing to make it easier for your target audience to consume.
  4. They’re SO easy to use – Both platforms are so easy to use it would be a shame not to use them. With a simple CMD+C and CMD+V (CTRL for the Windows users) command, you can easily import your writing into these apps and have them assess your writing in real-time.

So, the next time you’re feeling bummed out about how terrible you sound in your email, pop your message into Grammarly and the Hemingway App and let them work their magic!
